Roughly one in twelve men and one in two hundred women has some form of color vision deficiency, and many more read screens with cataracts, low vision or in poor lighting. A pairing that looks crisp to a designer can be illegible to a large slice of the audience. This validator checks both sides of accessibility: mathematical contrast and perceptual simulation.
The contrast ratio is computed from the relative luminance of the two colors, following the WCAG 2.1 algorithm. 4.5:1 passes Level AA for normal text — the legal minimum in many jurisdictions, including under the EU European Accessibility Act. 7:1 reaches the stricter Level AAA. Below 3:1 a pairing fails for text of any size.
Beyond the number, the tool renders your foreground-on-background sample under eight conditions: normal vision, the three dichromacies, full color blindness, mild and heavy cataract yellowing, and a low-vision contrast reduction — each with its own recalculated contrast. Both input colors are matched to exact named PIGMENTUM shades.
